Sympathetic replacement of wood windows in Borough Market

WWA member George Barnsdale is experienced in designing and manufacturing wood windows and doors for sensitive restoration projects. The company’s specialism in providing high performance replica wood windows and doors has meant that they have worked on large-scale projects such as The Lancasters , 20 Grosvenor Square  and more recently, 16 Winchester Walk in London.

Situated at the heart of the Borough High Street Conservation Area and over a scheduled ancient monument – the medieval Winchester Palace – 16 Winchester Walk is a Victorian fruit warehouse building. Designed by Cullinan Studio , the project saw the conversion of the original warehouse to a multi-use site encompassing loft style apartments, office space and a restaurant. The end result is a modern and light interior space, with the exterior finish not being out of place in the heart of historic Southwark.

George Barnsdale were engaged by Capita Construction to produce a number of wooden flush casement windows and doorsets for the project. Because of stringent planning requirements, the products were chosen from the company’s Historic Range of wood windows and doors, allowing for sympathetic replacement. Due to the location, in the heart of bustling Borough Market, acoustic glazing units were incorporated to ensure the comfort of those who live and work there. In the design, modern stainless steel hardware was incorporated to provide a contemporary feel to the interior.
